Dear Brother Protection–and all responsible for this site
I am writing from northern California where I share your concerns and practices. Possibly I’ll be able to come practice with you at the April theme weekend (though it conflicts with our northern CA OI retreat and I have to make a choice.)
Meanwhile, I would like to initiate a discussion that comes from abroad. As part of Joanna Macy’s international network, I have learned of an engaged Buddhist group in Japan that is holding a week-long conference in September to share what they have learned on developing “green temples” from experience with the triple disaster of Fukushima. (As you may know the great suffering of this earth/human catastrophe has been transformational for many Buddhist communities in Japan.) I am being asked to recommend someone from the US who is part of a Buddhist practice center here to be invited to their conference. I know several good candidates from other traditions, but I thought there might be someone connected with Deer Park who has awareness of the nuclear dangers and is interested in meeting with like-minded people internationally to share ideas about how Buddhist centers can become more “green.” It would make me feel good to recommend someone in my own tradition AND I am aware (as you certainly are) that DP is only 20 miles as the crow flies from the San Onofre nuclear site (which, though now not operating, will be radioactive and dangerous well into deep time. I have often thought that DP is in a perfect position, geographically, to play a role in the process Joanna calls “nuclear guardianship.”
